Sakariya, Unadkat help Saurashtra take Day 1 honours
Three wicket hauls for Chetan Sakariya and Jaydev Unadkat and positive batting from Harvik Desai put Saurashtra in a position of strength against Bengal at the end of the opening day of the Ranji Trophy final at Eden Gardens on Thursday (February 16). Bengal struggled with the bat as they were bowled out for 174 - they would have ended up with a lot less had it not been for half-centuries from Shahbaz Ahmed and Abishek Porel. Saurashtra lost a couple of wickets but Harvik's 38 not out off 51 will give them confidence heading into the second day as they went into Stumps at 81/2, trailing by 93 runs.
Having been asked to bat, Bengal were reduced to 65/6 inside the first 22 overs, with Sakariya and Unadkat doing the bulk of the damage. Unadkat, released from the Indian Test squad, was back as Saurashtra captain and he led from the front as he had Abhimanyu Easwaran caught off an inside edge at short leg in the first over. Sakariya delivered a double blow in the second over, having Sumanta Gupta caught at slip and Sudip Kumar Gharami bowled on a wicket that was offering a lot of help for the quicks. Unadkat then got his Bengal counterpart Manoj Tiwary to edge to gully as the hosts slipped to 17/4.
Anustup Majumdar tried to stem the rot but he became the fifth to depart, edging a Chirag Jani delivery to the 'keeper to head back for 16. Akash Ghatak also fell after a promising start, getting out to a short delivery from Sakariya, to leave Bengal six down before the Lunch break. Saurashtra, however, burnt two reviews - one for a caught-behind appeal against Abishek while the other was earlier in the session for a leg-before decision against Ghatak that was turned down. Shahbaz, meanwhile, had a lucky break as he edged a Prerak Mankad delivery to second slip and the umpire ruled that the catch wasn't taken cleanly, with the third umpire concurring with the onfield calBoth Shahbaz and Abishek found the boundaries regularly at the start of the second session as they attempted a fightback. Shahbaz was also reprieved on 38 when he was struck on the pad by Mankad, with Saurashtra not opting for a review and replays revealing that the ball would have struck leg stump. Shahbaz capitalised on it as he reached a half-century and the seventh wicket pair extended the partnership past 100 when Abishek struck a four off Dharmendrasinh Jadeja having overturned a leg-before decision earlier in the over. But in the same over, Dharmendrasinh had Shahbaz caught at short-leg by Vishvaraj Jadeja, with a review failing to come to the batter's aid as he fell at the brink of Tea.
Dharmendrasinh added a second wicket to his tally by having Akash caught at mid on attempting a pull and Jani ended Abishek's stay soon after he reached fifty, getting him to edge to slip. Unadkat took a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Mukesh to finish with three wickets as Bengal's innings came to an end in the 55th over.
Saurashtra got off to a positive start in their reply to Bengal's total, with Harvik dealing in a flurry of boundaries. The opener also struck a six off Mukesh Kumar before his opening partner Jay Gohil was bowled by Akash Deep. Vishvaraj had an edgy start and was nearly caught at slip by Abishek when he was on 4. He then took on Ishan Porel who was wayward with his line and length in his opening over, striking three fours to power Saurashtra past 50 in the 10th over.

Both Harvik and Vishvaraj continued finding the boundaries, with the latter collecting a total of five in his knock of 25 before poking at an outswinger from Mukesh to edge to slip. Harvik and nightwatchman Sakariya were unbeaten when stumps were drawn.
